A couple of quick tips to help the suction cup stay put: make sure the surface is clean, dry, and smooth (hardwood, tile, laminate, glass, or sealed counters work best, since dust or pet hair can break the seal), and if it's lost some tack, a tiny dab of Aquaphor or Vaseline on the gel pad can help it re-grip. You can also use the Prong Clover base that ships in the box, it presses into a cardboard scratcher and locks in with a twist instead of relying on suction.
